As part of our self-referral process, we ask a small number of questions about work and employment. We understand that people may want to know why this information is being collected and how it will be used.

Put simply, these questions help us make sure people get the right support, at the right time.

Why this matters

Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions are the second biggest cause of sickness absence in the UK, costing the economy over £5 billion each year and placing considerable pressure on employers, individuals and the NHS.

For many people, MSK pain or reduced movement can affect their ability to stay in work, return to work, or feel confident about work in the future. By understanding how MSK conditions affect people’s working lives, we can:

  • Identify people who may be at risk of leaving work because of an MSK problem
  • Better support people who are out of work or trying to return to work where MSK health is a barrier
  • Understand the needs of working-age people who self-refer to our service
  • Shape and improve local support for employers and employees across East Sussex

This work is supported by national Get It Right First Time (GIRFT) funding, which is helping us develop initiatives focused on keeping people well, active and in work.
